Why
Character
Education? Character education has
become increasingly important. If schools are to achieve high academic achievement and to
establish a safe and orderly learning environment, they must first promote positive
character traits. Schools must also work with parents, families, churches, civic groups
and businesses to help students develop the qualities to become responsible adults in our
democratic society. |

| How Did We Get Into Character
Education?
Recognizing the importance of good character, the Onslow County Board of Education
formed a Character Education Committee on October 3, 1995. By January, 1996, this task
force then developed and distributed a survey to 13,461 educators, students, parents, law
enforcement personnel, businessmen and other community groups. The results of this survey
helped the committee to identify eight character traits to be emphasized in schools:
respect, self-discipline, caring, responsibility, integrity, cooperation, citizenship and
trustworthiness.

On January 14, 1997, the Board of Education unanimously approved the committee's
recommendations. These recommendations are:
1. Character education will be taught in grades K-12 and will
address eight traits: respect, self-discipline, caring, responsibility, integrity,
cooperation, citizenship and trustworthiness.
2. Character education should be a community effort. ,
3. A public awareness committee will be formed to extend character
education to the community at large.
4. Character education will be taught with a ten-month emphasis.
